One of the things that makes Impact Dance Complex different is that our instructors don’t just teach dance—they actively work in the industry they teach. Every class our students take is influenced by real-world experience. Whether it’s performing on professional stages, choreographing live productions, teaching at colleges and conventions, appearing on television, or directing theatrical productions, our faculty continues to grow as artists while bringing that experience back into the classroom.

This summer, that philosophy came full circle as Impact Dance Complex Director Tony Azzaro was selected to perform as part of the professional dance cast for Christina Aguilera during Philadelphia’s America 250 July 4th Concert, one of the city’s largest annual celebrations. Performing alongside an artist like Christina Aguilera is the result of years of dedication, training, auditions, networking, and continually pursuing opportunities to grow.

Following several days of rehearsals & tech with a team of choreographers, dancers, musicians, and production professionals, Tony prepared to take the stage in front of thousands of spectators gathered on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for Philadelphia’s Independence Day celebration. Although severe weather ultimately forced organizers to cancel the concert before Christina was able to perform, the experience itself represented everything that professional performing arts is about: preparation, adaptability, and professionalism. Sometimes, the biggest lessons happen long before the curtain rises…

For many of our students, it’s exciting to know that the people teaching them each week are still active professionals in dance and entertainment. Throughout his career, Tony has worked alongside and learned from some of the biggest names in the industry including legendary choreographer Kenny Ortega (Dirty Dancing, High School Musical, and Descendants), acclaimed Broadway choreographer Luis Salgado (On Your Feet!) and actor/director Jason Segel (Shrinking & How I Met Your Mother). He has also had the opportunity to choreograph & direct at many levels including off-Broadway and more. While these experiences are exciting milestones professionally, they’re also valuable opportunities to continue learning from some of the industry’s best artists and creative teams.

One lesson we consistently share with our dancers is that success isn’t always defined by applause. Sometimes success means:

  • Earning the opportunity.
  • Preparing at the highest level.
  • Collaborating with incredible professionals.
  • Remaining positive when circumstances change.
  • Carrying yourself with integrity from the first rehearsal until the curtain comes down after bows.

Although Mother Nature had different plans for Philadelphia’s July 4th celebration, the hours of rehearsal, the relationships built throughout the process, and the experience of working alongside world-class professionals remain just as meaningful. In many ways, these are the experiences that shape artists & teachers the most. Parents often ask what separates Impact Dance Complex from other dance studios. One of our greatest strengths is that our staff doesn’t teach from old experiences, but from current ones. Our instructors continue to:

That means when our students learn about stage presence, rehearsal etiquette, adaptability, performance quality, and professionalism, they’re learning the same expectations that exist in today’s entertainment industry. Those lessons become part of every recreational class, every Performance Ensemble rehearsal, and every Competition Team practice here at Impact. We believe that great teachers remain great students. That commitment to lifelong learning extends throughout our faculty and is one of the reasons we’re able to provide students with dance education that is both technically strong and connected to today’s performing arts industry.
